Moving into the daily reality of photochemistry now. We will see many natural and artificial processes in the upcoming weeks and we dive a bit deeper into the photophysical mechanisms underlying these day to day events. We start of with colour and vision. Thursday a general intro, next week looking at the photochemistry and photobiology of rhodopsins that make this all possible.
As an intro, read Klan&Wirtz Ch 1.3

Changed the timing a bit
as we have progressed the timing of the subject has shifted a bit. I have posted an updates course schedule (with chapter references up to now)

Today we will finish the story on Spectroscopy (slides last week)
I will also introduce potential energy reaction surfaces that give us tools to understand better actual photochemical ractions (involving molecular changes)

Förster Energy Transfer calculations
If you have a PC/laptop you can do your own FRET calculations:

Preparing for Thursday 11 sept 2014 lecture
Today we hope to finish our survey of spectroscopic techniques.
Please continue to refer to the material as presented for the monday lecture (slides, bookschapters).
The halfway exam is coming soon, so you should be up to date with your reading

Slides for Monday 8 September
We will now talk about the techniques to measure all the phenomena we discussed in the past few weeks: spectroscopic techniques.
In the books: Klan&Wirz Chapter 3 (not in all detail)
Valeur: Chapter 6

Slides for Monday 1 Sept 2014
Up to now we have purely looked at unimolecular photophysical processes after photoexcitation. It is time we bring in some photochemistry by looking at interactions between the excited molecule and other molecules. The slides are here:
In the textbooks this is dealt with in the following paragraphs:
Valeur: CH4.1-4.4 (selected parts) and CH9
Klan&Wirz: CH2.2. and CH5.1-5.3

Thursday 28-8-2014
Today we continue to use the slides I posted for monday.
More on fluorscence, phosphorescence, lfetimes and quantum yields.
So in Klan and wirz we finish ch2.1
In Valeur this is mainly in Ch. 3.1 and 3.2

Slides for Monday 25-8-2014
We will continue our deeper understanding of the photophysical processes.
Especially looking at Frank Condon factors, luminescence (and some empirical rules that apply) and quantum yields.
In Klan&Wirz this is mostly described in Ch 2.1.3 and Ch 2.1.5-2.1.9
In Valeur the same is explained in 2.4 and 3.1.
The slides we will use:

Thursday 21-8-2014
We will be mainly focusing on Klan and Wirz 2.1..1, 2.1.2, 2.1.3 and 2.1.4
You can also turn to Ch. 2 of Valeur
We will do some exercises as well.
Here are the slides (probably thursday we run up and till slide 33):

Thursday 14-8: Introduction
We are really kicking off now. You will find the slides below:
In the textbook of Klan and Wirz (Photochemistry of Organic Compounds) this is basically Chapter 1.1, 1.2, 1.4 (except for special topic 1.1).
1.3 will also be treated seperately later when we also deal with colourvision
